Karigane or Kukicha is a Japanese name for tea with highest content of stems. After the production of Aracha, the leaves are sorted into loose leaves (Sencha) and stems (Kukicha). Kukicha tends to be cheaper than Sencha, but many people genuinely prefer stem tea for the distinctive savory taste and low caffeine content. The stems make a good combination with different types of leaves, so in the shops you may see Kuki-Hōjicha, Kuki-Gyokuro and even Kuki-Tencha.
